KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
What is the best way to get to Kruger National Park?
Most international visitors fly into O. R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, then take a domestic flight to Skukuza Airport (inside the park) or Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (1.5/2 hours outside the park), followed by a transfer or rental car. Do I need to book accommodation in advance?
Yes! Popular camps, such as Skukuza Rest Camp, often sell out months in advance. We have reserved a select number of accommodation options, but we recommend booking as early as possible through our conference organiser, Jackey Deacon (dot@mpu.co.za), especially if you have extra family and friends joining you.
Do I have to stay in Skukuza?
Yes, we strongly recommend it. Park gates close at 18:00 in September, and driving after dark is not allowed, so staying outside the park would mean missing evening sessions. We would love to make sure everyone can fully immerse themselves in the fun conference events and opportunities during their stay.
Can I drive myself in the park?
Yes! Kruger is one of the best self-drive safari destinations in the world, with well-maintained roads, clear signage, and rest camps spaced throughout the park. However, guided game drives will be available to book throughout the conference.
Are there guided safaris available?
Yes. Guided game drives and bush walks are offered by SANParks and will be available to book on arrival at the Conference. As one of the most famous wildlife parks in Africa, Kruger is home to a host of incredible animal and bird life. There will be plenty of time to enjoy early morning game drives as well as night drives throughout the conference.
Is it safe to walk around?
Yes. Skukuza is fenced, and you can walk freely inside the camp, day and night, but a torch is useful after dark. Never leave the camp on foot, and stay in your vehicle outside camp except at designated areas.
What facilities are there at Skukuza?
Skukuza is one of the largest rest camps and has a petrol station, a post office, several restaurants, a spa, a shop, and even a 360-degree cinema.
Most camps, shops, and restaurants will accept major credit cards, but carrying some South African rand is useful for small purchases or tips.
Is there medical help at Skukuza?
There is a doctor's practice in Skukuza (+27 13 735 5638), and basic first aid is available in camp. The nearest hospitals are in Mbombela (Nelspruit) and Hazyview. We recommend travel insurance that includes medical evacuation.
Do I pay to enter the park?
Yes. Everyone pays a daily conservation fee to SANParks for each day in the park, in addition to accommodation.
Holders of a SANParks Wild Card do not pay daily fees. Conservation fees will need to be paid on arrival to the park by all visitors for the duration of your stay.

What are the rules in the park?
Keep to 50 km/h on tar and 40 km/h on gravel roads (20 km/h in camp); don't feed any animals (including monkeys and baboons in camp); don't leave the road; and be back in camp before the gate closes. Please keep noise down in camp at night. Otherwise, the main rule is to enjoy the park and take in the wonders that are Kruger!

What will the weather be like?
Late September is the end of the dry season: warm to hot days (often 25–32 °C) and cool mornings and evenings, with little rain. It is one of the best times of year for wildlife viewing.
Is malaria a concern?
Kruger is in a malaria area. The risk is usually low, with the highest risk from November to April, but SANParks advises all visitors to speak to a doctor or travel clinic about antimalarial medication before travelling. Use insect repellent and cover up in the evenings. See a doctor if you get flu-like symptoms within weeks of your visit.
What should I pack?
Light, neutral-coloured clothing, a warm layer for early mornings and evenings, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, a torch and comfortable closed shoes. Binoculars are highly recommended. Congress dress is casual, but wildlife-themed socks (and clothes) are actively encouraged!
What currency is used?
The South African rand (ZAR). Cards are widely accepted at Skukuza shops, restaurants and fuel stations, but carry some cash for tips and small purchases. South Africa has a strong tipping culture, and we encourage visitors to support this by tipping 10-15% for hospitality and service.
What plugs are used?
South Africa uses 230 V with Type M (three large round pins) and Type C/N sockets. Bring a universal adapter.
visa and travel documents
Do I need a visa for South Africa?
Many nationalities can visit visa-free for up to 90 days, including the USA, UK, EU countries, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, India and Brazil; some, such as China and South Korea, get 30 days. Check the Department of Home Affairs' exempt countries list for your passport. If you need a visa, apply well in advance; visas are not issued on arrival.
What is the SARS traveller declaration?
A customs declaration that every traveller entering or leaving South Africa must complete online, within 24 hours before travelling, since 1 July 2026. Complete it at the SARS traveller portal or in the SATMS app, and keep the confirmation email. It is required even if you have nothing to declare, including for children.
Do I need a yellow fever certificate?
Only if you are travelling from, or have transited through, a yellow fever country in Africa or South America. Direct airport transits are exempt.
